Funny, today we did absolutely nothing. Of course it's impossible to do nothing and actually be alive but it feels like a pretty lazy day. The kids sometimes play a game where they say, "Okay, do nothing for the next 10 seconds!". I stand still with my eyes closed and they say, "You cheated! You were breathing and standing and your eyes were closed and your blood was pumping." Apparently it's impossible to do nothing without being dead, and today we were definitely not dead. Not too much to report on the excitement scale - but definitely not dead!
We slept in, again. (Is this a recurring theme?) Speaking of dead I was actually slightly concerned about my mom because it was 11:30 and she still wasn't up. I had looked at her an hour earlier and she was in the same exact position. I started to think irrationally - how do we get the body home? Who comes here to help? How do you fill out a death certificate in Italian? Etc. Eventually she woke up so there was no added excitement to our trip. Not that we needed any - we had an Italian laundromat to visit!
We travel with carry-on only which means that we each have about 5 days worth of clothes with us. We did a load in Rome but because of the washing machine confusion it was less that we would've liked. We were down to one pair of underwear each (a scary situation) so we needed to rectify that situation. (Hee - I said rectify!) *Disclaimer - I am writing this at almost midnight and I've had my fair share of Chianti….)
Okay, moving on. The laundromat was kind of fun! It was very clean and nicely decorated and aside from the fact that the machine ate my mom's 20€ bill it was very efficient. It was mesmerizing to watch the clothes and it felt like they were getting super clean. The kids were actually inspired to do a 'clothes dance' to pass the time. With a 30 minute wash and 30 minute dry we were out of there before we knew it. Okay, Jeff was a little bored but my mom and I enjoyed looking at the Italian trash magazines while the kids perfected their dance moves.
We opted for eating in tonight so we bought some basic groceries and prepared our own Tuscan delight. I channeled my inner Food Network and we tossed fresh tortellini with quartered baby tomatoes, baby spinach, garlic, olive oil and parmesan. YUM. I think it tasted even better than normal because we watched a gorgeous red sunset for a full 20 minutes while we ate. Of course this was complimented with a bottle of local chianti and some amazing market green beans. It's always interesting how the most basic ingredients taste the best when prepared simply and without fuss. Good company helps too.
The evening progressed with the kids playing Monopoly while the adults discussed important stuff boring to kids. (Do you remember being a kid and wondering how adults could sit around talking without playing with any toys? How boring!) More chianti, beautiful night… what more is there?
If this isn't a vacation then I'm not sure what is….
